Summer Steelhead Season Has Begun

I am often asked “What is the difference between a salmon and a steelhead?” The easiest answer is steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout and salmon are salmon.  Both are in the same family of fish called salmonids.

Like salmon, steelhead return to their original river hatching ground to spawn. Here is the main difference, salmon make one journey to the ocean and then return to their birthplace in the river to spawn and die. Steelhead make several trips to the ocean over their lifetime and spawn multiple times. They also eat during their freshwater journey, unlike salmon, which makes them a little easier to catch!
