Rogue River Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Report

Hegan!

Rogue river steelhead fishing on the upper Rogue has been productive. We have been hooking plenty of hatchery and native steelhead running small plugs in between salmon holes. This is one of the best times of the year for fishing on the upper Rogue having opportunities to catch both salmon and steelhead and to take multiple fish home.  Steelhead seem to be plentiful in the Rogue and we will be fishing for steelhead through the end of the year.

Just a reminder, now through December we will be fishing the upper Rogue for summer steelhead using a variety of techniques (running plugs, side-drifting, bobber fishing, fly fishing...) with the 1st two weeks of November being some of the most productive for terminal gear and September and October being the prime months for fly fishing on the upper Rogue.

During summer, fall and into early winter we will be fishing for summer steelhead within a short drive from both Medford and Grants Pass. As winter progresses, we head just an hour north for winter steelhead fishing on the Umpqua river.

Now through October we will be fishing for salmon and steelhead on the upper and middle Rogue river from Shady Cove to below Hog Creek, downstream of Grants Pass. With combination fishing, there is rarely a dull moment with lots of techniques to master and skills to practice while drifting down one of the most wild and scenic rivers in southern Oregon.

We are expecting our fall run of salmon soon (August) on the heels of the spring salmon run. We will keep you posted!  Fall fish tend to be larger than their spring king cousins and tend to have a more predictable bite.

Translation: hooking and landing more fish!

August and early September is some of the most fun fishing on the upper Rogue and, luckily, as October and November approach and the peak salmon run starts to decline on the upper river, fall rains open the coastal rivers and salmon season begins again on the Elk and Sixes, near Port Orford.
