Rogue River Fishing Report, for the Upper Rogue river, Shady Cove, Medford, Ashland.

We started off the week Chinook (king) salmon fishing during the eclipse and finished the week with a salmon derby put on by the Middle Rogue Steelheaders, supporting projects to restore the Rogue and nearby rivers here in southern Oregon. The days in between we stayed busy, busy, busy as you can see.

Rogue river salmon fishing has picked up this week.  Most days guests have had multiple chances to hook and land fall Chinook with many catching their limit of salmon and steelhead.

Fall fish tend to have a more predictable bite and are often easier to hook and land than spring salmon. In the past few weeks we have had anglers ranging in age from 8 to 99 and at all skills levels landing fish. Since the salmon fishing has been so productive we have focused a bit less attention on steelhead fishing, but steelhead are plentiful in the river and whenever we put a lure in the water or take a little time to side-drift we hook into steelies too.

We will be fishing for salmon on the Rogue river through October (and then to the Elk and Sixes rivers!) and for summer steelhead through the end of the year.

See below for a bit more information about Rogue river fly fishing.

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report for the Upper Rogue

As mentioned in previous posts, the upper Rogue river becomes fly fishing only for September and October (although we fly fish whenever there are steelhead in the river!). ODFW designates this section of the Rogue fly fishing only to protect spawning salmon and as a bonus offers anglers the solitude of a wilderness experience and the thrill of hooking into a Rogue river summer steelhead on a fly rod!

The Rogue is one of the best know fly fisheries in southern Oregon and boasts healthy numbers of summer and winter steelhead and rainbow and cutthroat trout.

Just a note, if you want to try it on your own, all wild fish must be released. The Rogue river has specific regulations to protect the fishery so be sure to check out ODFW's fishing regulations for southwest Oregon or join us on a trip and let your guide worry about all the details.

September and October are prime times to fly fish the upper Rogue for steelhead and to fish for salmon and steelhead using lures and bait just downstream. Both options are just a short distance from Medford and Grants Pass (15-30 minutes).
